The cycle by which all of our bodies operate on a rest level is called the circadian rhythm and its based on the 24 hour day we all enjoy. It is fairly temperamental and can be thrown out of whack pretty easily. When it is our bodies are not able to get the full amount of rest they need in order to perform at the top level. Things like naps, exercise, or even our exposure to light can throw it off.
Our aging process is something we cannot avoid and is something that can play a major role in the way we sleep. Anything from job stress to deadlines to exams at school can keep the mind active far beyond the normal down time it should be at night. In addition to making it harder to fall asleep these stressors can make it easier for us to be disturbed at night again preventing the deep sleep from setting in. Recreational or social drugs can have a huge impact on the way your sleep at night. Chances are there are more drugs that fit this category than you might think. Caffeine for example can stay in your system for up to 14 hours after consumption. Meaning a late morning cup of coffee can prevent your mind from fully turning down when it is time to go to bed. The caffeine will also make it easier for you to be woken up during the night.
Alcohol is thought to help you get to sleep faster in the short term, and that is typically true. Unfortunately once the alcohol passes through the system it can cause you to be more easily disturbed later on. Usually the alcohol will affect you for 3 to 4 hours after consumption.
